Cheroney Pelupessy contacted me to assist Karindra Perrier with the composition for her piece Keturunan. A piece about diaspora, the cultural heritage of the Indonesian and Maluku people that moved to the Netherlands decades ago.
(2022) Faradays - Flaunt (Tom's Tifa Version)
I was charged with adapting a piece Karindra's work for theatre. She already made most of the piece but needed a little boost towards the final act of the piece. I took her track Flaunt and shedded all the melodic idea's and added som traditional Maluku drums to the mix.
(2022) Home (Saya Pulang)
It was a bit of a puzzle to find proper instrumentation and sounds to fit onto the Flaunt remix. I ended up removing all the original pieces of Karindra's arrangement and starting from scratch with just the tifa drum parts.
I started blending different influences together, afro-tribal chanting, western electronica and a flute part which sound resembles the conch flute they play in Indonesia. The final result is a rainbow of influences and styles that I've glued together in a cohesive package for the final stretch of the performance. An amazing little cross pollination of different cultures.
